Intravenous (IV) & Infusion Therapy

A Valuable Component of Treatment

IV Nutrition Therapy is the process of giving vital nutrients directly to the body via the bloodstream. IV Nutrient Therapy delivers vitamins, amino acids, minerals and other nutrients into the blood stream quickly without needing or taxing the digestive system. IV therapy is able to reach nutrient-starved organs, like the brain, when other methods of ingestion are not effective. Patients frequently report mental clarity many days following treatment.

We believe that nutritional intravenous therapy can have positive clinical benefits when vitamins and minerals are administered in therapeutic dosages. Nutritional intravenous therapy is a standard therapy widely practiced in hospitals and clinics worldwide. If IV therapy is incorporated into your overall treatment plan, it is important to follow through with your schedule. A typical treatment protocol involves an initial series of five to ten treatments, which may be extended over a number of months, and may need to be repeated from time to time in order to maintain its benefits. The benefits of nutritional intravenous therapy are much greater if you follow a healthy lifestyle – no smoking, weight control, proper exercise, proper diet, appropriate stress management, and nutritional supplementation.

Chelation involves the intravenous administration of a powerful antioxidant called ethylene-diaminete-traacetic acid (EDTA). EDTA enters the bloodstream and latches onto heavy metals such as lead, iron, and cadmium that can cause free radical damage to the arteries. By binding to these heavy metals and carrying them out of the body through the urine, EDTA reduces the body’s toxic metal burden and helps slow the process of atherosclerosis.

EDTA also removes excess calcium from artery walls, making them more responsive and better able to dilate. Since calcification of the arteries is a major reason in atherosclerosis, this is yet another way in which chelation restores the integrity of arteries and enhances blood flow. As an added benefit, EDTA chelation has blood-thinning effects and discourages the formation of potentially dangerous blood clots.

During treatment, which lasts one-and-a-half to three hours, you relax in a recliner while EDTA is administered slowly through an IV. A complete course of EDTA chelation therapy consists of about 20-30 treatments, usually done one to three times per week.

Atherosclerosis, the narrowing and stiffening of arteries due to the accumulation of plaques, is a primary cause of heart attack and stroke. What if there was a nonsurgical therapy that could slow the process of atherosclerosis and restore healthy circulation? Wouldn’t this be preferable to the risk and cost of angioplasty and bypass surgery? The good news is that EDTA chelation is such a therapy. It is a proven means of enhancing arterial health and boosting circulation

iEDTA chelation therapy was originally designed as a treatment for heavy metal poisoning, and its effectiveness for heart disease and circulatory disorders was discovered only by accident in the 1950s. As World War II veterans afflicted with lead poisoning from painting battleships underwent chelation to “get the lead out,” physicians noticed that those who had chest pain or leg pain due to atherosclerosis were experiencing almost unbelievable improvement in these symptoms.

During the past 50 years, over a million patients have undergone chelation therapy for a range of circulatory problems. Chelation has given heart disease patients an alternative to invasive heart surgery and has enabled patients with intermittent claudication to increase their walking distance. It has been used to reduce angina, to reduce high blood pressure, and to spare diabetic patients from limb amputation.

Chelation has an impeccable record of safety. An FDA safety review spanning 30 years revealed no evidence of significant toxicity. And of over 500,000 patients nationwide treated with chelation therapy using the protocol established by the American College for the Advancement of Medicine (ACAM), not a single fatality has occurred. Compare this to coronary artery bypass surgery, which has a fatality rate of 4 percent. This means that for every 500,000 patients who undergo bypass surgery, an estimated 20,000 will die.

Safety is one thing, but effectiveness is another, and this therapy is effective. A 1993 review of 40 published and 30 unpublished studies involving over 25,000 patients who underwent EDTA chelation demonstrated that 87 percent benefited from this therapy.

The Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT)

The Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT) is a recently completed seven-year, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and carried out by university cardiologists and experienced chelation physicians from around the United States and Canada. The results of this 1,708-patient study were presented at the American Heart Association meeting in November 2012 in Los Angeles. This double-blind study (where neither the patient nor the physician knew whether the actual therapy or placebo was being administered) compared patients who were treated with medications with intravenous chelation therapy to those with medications but without chelation. All told, researchers delivered 55,222 infusions. The study showed potentially important improvement in patients who had previous heart attacks and were already under cardiology treatment, especially those patients with diabetes. Thirty-two percent had diabetes, 68% had high blood pressure, and 73% had been prescribed cholesterol-lowering statins.

There were 18% fewer cardiac events in the treated group and 39% fewer cardiac events in diabetics. The group treated with chelation had fewer subsequent surgeries than those who received a placebo. These findings were statistically significant, and unexpected by most cardiologists. The study also proved that EDTA chelation is safe.

During the TACT trial, the number of treatments given was 40. Recommendation for follow-up after the 40 treatments is once or twice a month.

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is one of the most groundbreaking therapies now available which was originated by Patricia Kane, Ph.D., a renowned biochemist.

Phosphatidylcholine, an unsaturated fatty acid that forms the major component of inner and outer cell membranes, is infused along with activated folic acid and glutathione. Used in combination with the PK protocol, giving PC Intravenously (IV) has been shown to reduce plaque in arteries. It is given IV with Folinic acid, and Glutathione, usually alternating with chelation IV's. There is a synergistic effect between these two IV's effectively and safely removing plaque from the arteries.

Glutathione with PC comprise the key components of the PK Protocol. Glutathione is an important intracellular antioxidant that is especially important in protecting liver, brain, and kidney cells from toxicity and free radicals. It is a naturally occurring tripeptide synthesized within the body which safely and effectively supports the detoxification of heavy metals and chemicals.

Leucovorin or Folinic acid is a vitamin of the B vitamin folic acid (vitamin B-9), which supports the body processes of detoxification per methylation and helps to stabilize phospholipids in the cell membrane.

The P-K protocol is employed particularly in patients being treated for:

Mental confusion related to liver disease may dramatically improve, especially when also treated with intravenous phenyl butyrate, an organic acid.

The PK protocol involves infusions of Essential Phospholipid (EPL) lipid exchange in a branded product called LipoStabil. The treatment replaces the bad fats in a persons membranes with good essential fatty acids, creating younger, healthier membranes.

An infusion of Leucovorin (Folinic acid) is then given, which is crucial for your DNA function and repair.

Finally, up to 2,000 mg of Glutathione is infused by IV push (over 5-10 minutes). Glutathione is the body’s premier detoxifier.

It has been found that IV and oral PC along with balanced fatty acids can improve neurological and liver function, memory, and athletic endurance. It may be able to reverse fatty liver, and for patients with liver disease, this would be a treatment of choice along with supplements and diet.

PC levels in all tissues decrease with age, and PC treatment is able to reverse age related changes in the lipid membrane composition, thus rejuvenating all cells. The lipid neuronal cell membranes are turned over and made new every 24 hours, so adequate presence of PC and the correct balance of essential fats and oils can make rapid and significant inroads into neurodegenerative conditions.

We offer two different Meyers Vitamin and Mineral IV infusions: A Meyers, and a Super Meyers. The ingredients differ, but they are combinations of calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and B-Complex. We also can add in Glutathione if necessary. These combinations create synergy between the micronutrients and minerals, enhancing their function in the body. The goal of the Meyers Vitamin Nutrients and Mineral IV infusions is to increase energy and promote improved health and immunity, decrease stress, and increase the function of the body to do its job optimally. The Meyer’s Cocktail can be very useful in situations where oral nutrients or other therapies are not working.
